The Palestinian Medical Association in Europe – France Branch (PalMed France) successfully concluded its scientific medical conference in Geneva, Switzerland, held on 24–25 January 2026 under the title: “Malnutrition and Famine in Gaza,” with broad international and academic participation.

The conference brought together a distinguished group of doctors, consultants, and academic experts from several European countries, along with representatives from major international organizations, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). Participants delivered scientific presentations addressing the current healthcare and humanitarian challenges in Gaza, particularly the severe impact of war, malnutrition, and shortages of medical resources.
A key highlight of the conference was the participation of university professors and doctors from Gaza who joined remotely via Zoom, sharing real-time insights into the ongoing healthcare crisis and the daily challenges faced by medical teams working under extremely difficult humanitarian conditions. Their contributions added a powerful scientific and human dimension to the conference discussions.
The event was attended by healthcare professionals, humanitarian workers, researchers, and public health specialists from across Europe, making it an important scientific platform for knowledge exchange, international medical collaboration, and raising awareness about the devastating effects of malnutrition and famine on Gaza’s population, especially children, women, and vulnerable communities.
At the conclusion of the conference, PalMed France reaffirmed its commitment to organizing further scientific and medical events, strengthening international partnerships, and continuing to support the Palestinian healthcare system through capacity building, research collaboration, and humanitarian medical initiatives aimed at improving healthcare services in Palestine and other regions facing humanitarian crises.

In response to the worsening healthcare crisis in Gaza, the Palestinian Doctors Association in Europe (PalMed), supported by PalMed France, continues its critical humanitarian campaigns through maternal and child health centers across the region.
These efforts include child vaccination drives, malnutrition screening, and the distribution of essential medications—vital interventions in a region where the health system has been severely weakened by war and ongoing blockade.
The destruction of healthcare infrastructure has made it extremely difficult for families to access even the most basic medical services. PalMed’s on-the-ground response is helping fill this urgent gap, aiming to protect vulnerable children from preventable diseases and life-threatening malnutrition.

Overview of the Project for the Maintenance and Renovation of the Central Sterilisation Department at the Gaza-European Hospital.

First: Location

The Central Sterilisation Department is considered one of the critical departments at the Gaza-European Hospital. This hospital is one of the three remaining hospitals serving citizens in the southern region of the Gaza Strip, which also includes a number of displaced persons. It is the second-ranking hospital in terms of specialisations and readiness to provide services, particularly in surgeries and intensive care, in addition to outpatient clinics, inpatient wards, and similar departments.

The Central Sterilisation Department serves all specialisations throughout the hospital, most notably the 5 central operating theatres, the recovery unit with a capacity of no less than 6–8 beds, the cardiac surgery and catheterisation unit, and the neurosurgery department. It also serves the daycare rooms, adult and paediatric intensive care units, neonatal unit, and emergency departments.

2. Improvement of General Appearance, Cleanliness, Storage, Organisation, and the Level of Instrument and Environmental Sterilisation: This shall be achieved through the proposed construction works, including marble works that will involve custom-built housings for the new washers and properly protected storage containers made from materials that are easily cleanable and which contribute to elevated standards of infection control.

Fourth: Project Phases

1. Maintenance of Suspended Ceilings: Evaluation and replacement of damaged tiles to ensure the facility’s safety.

2. Maintenance of Water and Wastewater Networks: Renovation of piping systems and related bathroom fixtures.

3. Painting and Interior Design Works: Treatment and painting of walls.

4. Carpentry Works: Repair of doors and replacement of damaged ones.

7. Tiling Works: Maintenance of floor and wall tiles.

8. Fixture Installations: Installation of fibreglass wall panels with protective aluminium corner guards.

9. Supply of Washing Machines for the Department’s Instruments: Supply, installation, and commissioning of the machines.

Fifth: Anticipated Project Outcomes

  1. Improved performance and work quality in the department.
  2. Enhanced levels of infection control.
  3. Provision of a comfortable work environment and higher standards of operation following the department’s upgrade.
  4. Compliance with health standards: Improved service quality in accordance with local and international standards.
  5. Sustainability of resources and equipment: Through periodic hospital maintenance.
  6. Increased productivity and speed: Through the provision of the new machines that will facilitate operations of the relevant departments and improve the quality of sterilised materials.

As part of its ongoing humanitarian efforts, PalMed , through its Denmark and France branches, has launched a project to support pregnant displaced women in Gaza camps.

The Denmark branch has established a dedicated maternity and gynecology clinic at Yaffa Hospital, while the France branch has initiated a similar project by setting up a medical point in the region.

These clinics provide regular check-ups for pregnant women, ultrasound scans, and essential medications, including iron supplements and vitamins, all free of charge. These services are critical in light of the fragile healthcare system and the difficulty of accessing medical care in Gaza, where pregnant women face severe shortages of food, medicine, and nutritional supplements.

This initiative addresses the urgent needs of pregnant women, many of whom struggle to find adequate nutrition during pregnancy due to a dire scarcity of fruits and vegetables. The region faces the looming threat of famine, with 95% of Gaza’s population living under extreme food insecurity, according to the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC). Additionally, a report by UN Women highlights that 55% of breastfeeding mothers in Gaza suffer from health conditions that hinder their ability to nurse their babies.

This project is part of the association’s broader relief efforts, aiming to support these vulnerable groups through medical points established in various locations across Gaza.
